Marshrutka (called also marshrutnoye taksi) is a kind of share-taxi with a fixed route that can pick and drop passengers anywhere on the way and doesn’t have fixed time schedules. Marshrutkas are normally minibuses with up to 15 passenger seats. They are not marked any special colour but are similar in models – GAZelle and Bogdan.
A marshrutka normally starts off when all seats are taken. Hail and ride is a typical way to board. Note that it has been illegal to drive standing passengers since November 2008. Yet some drivers ignore the regulation. So, don’t be surprised if some marshrutkas pass you by or you have to stand half-bent in one of them all the way to your destination.
The share-taxis skip stops that are not requested. Therefore, unless travelling to the end of the route, you should watch carefully the road and shout out the name of your stop when it comes in view.
The fare of a ride within Donetsk makes UAH 1.5-2. The exact price will be written on a plate inside a particular marshrutka. All payments must be made once you get on by passing the money to the driver through other passengers. If you don’t want to end up handing money back and forth, avoid the seats in the front.
Tickets are given by the driver if requested but nobody will check them as on a regular buses.
