The Salt Lakes

Slavyansk city is famous for its unique lakes of karst origin. These are the only salt lakes in Ukraine that are so distant from the sea. Their history counts over five centuries, when the place was first mentioned in historical chronicles. The area numbers several lakes with Slepnoye and Repnoye being the largest ones. They make up a recreation area with several health centres, mud cure clinics and a park. The water has healing properties allowing to cure various diseases.
The lakes originated from the ancient Perm Sea. Once the sea waters stepped back, they left numerous karst cavities filled later with underground waters saturated with dissolved mine salts.
