Stone Graves (Kamennye Mohily) Reserve

Being a sublime combination of vast steppes and stone blocks, the reserve is undoubtedly impressive. The huge stone massifs emerged here around 2 billion years ago as a result of volcanic eruption which raised the Earth crust exposing rocks of pink granite. Rocks of colour granite take around 30% of the reserve’s territory, while another 70% is uncultivated steppe free from any man-caused intrusion.

The City of the Dead is another name given to the area, as two circles of grave mounds close around the reserve. Numerous stone idols suggest the area was home for many tribes 5000 years ago. Stone sculptures were used as charms or guards as they symbolized forefathers and were intended to protect people from enemies and misfortunes.
