Credit cards, traveller’s checks and ATMs

Credit cards are accepted in major restaurants, shops and hotels. Visa and MasterCard are in wide use. But down-market facilities and remote districts traditionally prefer cash. To avoid conflicts, it is advisable to inquire beforehand whether your credit card is accepted. It’s also a good idea to have always some cash at hand.
Surprising as it might seem, but traveller's checks are a bad option for Donetsk. It is hard to exchange them than in the most European cities, and the procedure requires much paperwork and a high fee. If you still want to take some traveler's checks, take Thomas Cook or Visa, which are the most common in Ukraine. To cash them you will need a passport and the receipt of purchase.
ATM is another easy way to access funds. The machines are present all over the city. Normally they give money in hryvnias but some offer dollars too. The fee is considerably lower than that for traveller’s checks.
