Victory Day

Officially, the day marks capitulation of the Nazi Germany to the USSR, but is venerated across CIS countries, including Ukraine, as the victory of the USSR over the Nazis.
The Victory Day is, above all, an occasion for war veterans to meet. Soviet war songs are played in public places and festive concerts are organized; wreaths are laid to cenotaphs. Ceremonial greeting of the local veterans has been a traditional day-time arrangement for long. Thematic exhibitions and military movies kick off a week before the day to give a deep insight into the war history of Ukraine and the region. Secondary schools initiate campaigns to support the veterans.
The holiday goes beyond purely official celebrations. Sport and entertainment activities also take place if the weather favours celebrations.
