Independence Day
|
|
This day is undoubtedly the major state holiday in Ukraine, asserting sovereignty and independence of the country. Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union was adopted on 24 August 1991. Since then, the date has been a red-letter day on the national calendar. Celebrations are extensive and take place all across Ukraine. Various public entertainments and sport activities are organized in Donetsk. They traditionally open with a parade or a public meeting in the main square featuring greeting speeches by local officials and the city mayor. The main activities usually unfold in the city center – on Lenin square and in central parks. Mass bashes in the open air, amateur sport contests and other public amusements are common. The celebration usually ends with a musical concert and impressive fireworks.
