A number of international railway routes from Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, etc pass through or terminate in Donetsk Railway Station (rus. Vokzal). It is located just 4-5 km from the centre, so getting to the downtown is easy. A typical option is a taxi. Plenty of drivers offer their services at the exit. Their price is somewhat higher and tends to skyrocket when they hear a foreign language. So, get ready to haggle as the cost of a ride to the centre should not be more than $3-4 (UAH 30 - rus. tridtsat’ griven).
You can also call a taxi. A car will arrive to the railway within 10 minutes. In this case, you will pay the fixed fare on the car’s counter. For the list of taxis, please go here.
Once you step out of the station, you will probably see many marshrutkas (share-taxi) to the left and right. The routes vary significantly. You can inquire about the appropriate line at the information booth. But if the city centre is your target, the best budget way to get there in 20-30 minutes is marshrutka No.2. The fare will make 1.5 (about $ 0.20). A trip in a trolley bus No.2 will cost UAH 1 ($0.12) and take 40-50 minutes.
